How many systems are there for mass spectrometry detectors

2026-04-10

Mass spectrometry analyzer is a precision and efficient multi-functional analytical instrument that separates molecules of different molecular weights, determines molecular weight and performs composition and structure analysis according to the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of ions.

Generally include injection systems, ion sources, mass analyzers, ion detectors, vacuum systems, and data processing systems.

1. Injection system: Introduce the sample into the mass spectrometer. It can be divided into two ways: direct injection and through interface.

1) Direct injection: At room temperature and atmospheric pressure, gaseous or liquid samples can be introduced into the ion source in the form of a neutral stream through an adjustable spout device.

2) Injection through interface technology: At present, the rapid development of mass spectrometry injection system is a variety of chromatography and mass spectrometry interface technology, which introduces chromatographic effluent into mass spectrometry and is ionized for mass spectrometry analysis.

2. Ion source: It is a device that ionizes the sample to produce a charged particle beam, and the ion source is the heart of the mass spectrometer. Since the energy required for ionization varies greatly from molecule to molecule, different ionization methods should be chosen for different molecules. Generally, the ionization method that can give more energy to the sample is called the hard ionization method, and the ionization method that gives the sample less energy is the soft ionization method, and the soft ionization method is suitable for samples that are easy to break or ionize.

3. Mass analyzer: Positive ions with different kinetic energy generated in the ion source are accelerated in the accelerator, and after increasing the energy, the charged ions are separated according to their mass-to-charge ratio in the mass analyzer.

4. Ion detector: The detector receives and detects the separated ions and amplifies their output signal.

5. Data processing system: use workstation software to control the sample determination program, collect data and calculation results, analyze and judge results, display and output mass spectra, data storage and call, etc.

6. Vacuum system: In the mass spectrometer, all areas where sample molecules and ions exist must be in a vacuum state to reduce the background and reduce the interference caused by interion or ion-to-molecule collision, and the oxygen in the residual air will also burn the filament of the ion source.
