A thorough inspection of the sampler prior to each VOC gas sampling is a critical step in ensuring the accuracy and validity of the sample. Below are a few important areas to check:
Exterior Inspection
Overall Integrity: Look carefully at the sampler's casing for damage, cracks or deformation. For example, check the body of the sampler for breaks caused by knocks, as this may affect the proper functioning of the internal components or even lead to gas leakage.
Connection parts: Check whether the connections between the various parts of the sampler are tight. Focus on the air inlet, air outlet, sampling tube interface and other locations to ensure that the connection is firm and there is no sign of loosening or detachment. If sampling with adsorption tubes, make sure that the adsorption tubes are tightly connected to the sampler to prevent gas leakage during sampling, which will affect the sampling volume and authenticity of the samples.
Function check
Flow Control Function: Accuracy Check: Tests whether the flow control of the sampler is accurate. Set a specific flow rate value according to the sampling requirements and use the flow meter to check whether the actual flow rate matches the set value. For example, if you need to sample at a flow rate of 100ml/min, after setting the sampler, observe whether the actual flow rate displayed by the flowmeter is within the allowable error range (generally the error should be controlled within ±5%).
Stability check: Let the sampler run under the set flow rate for a period of time, and observe whether the flow rate can remain stable. Fluctuations in flow rate may cause inaccuracies in the sampling volume, which may affect the accuracy of the test results. This can be done by running the sampler for 10 - 15 minutes to check for changes in flow rate.
Cleanliness check
Internal Cleanliness: Check the interior of the sampler for residual dust, impurities, or samples left over from previous sampling. These residues may interfere with the current sampling or react chemically with the newly collected sample. This can be checked by looking at the air intake channel, sampling chamber, etc., and cleaned with clean compressed air or special cleaning tools if necessary.
External Cleaning: Ensure that the exterior of the sampler is clean and tidy, with no dirt or chemical residues. This is because external contaminants may enter the interior of the sampler during operation or pose a safety hazard to sampling personnel.
Battery and Power Check
Power Check: For battery-powered samplers, check that the batteries are fully charged. This can be done by checking the power indicator on the sampler or by using a specialized battery test kit to determine the remaining battery power. If the power is low, replace or recharge the batteries in a timely manner to ensure that the sampling process is not interrupted due to depletion of power.
Power connection (if it is an external power supply): Check whether the connection cable of the external power supply is intact and whether the connection between the plug and the socket is normal. Ensure that the sampler can be powered stably during the sampling process to avoid abnormal operation of the sampler due to power problems.
Calibration Check
Calibration expiration date check: Check the calibration label or record of the sampler to confirm that its calibration is within the expiration date. If the calibration has expired, it needs to be re-calibrated to ensure the sampler's measurement accuracy.
Calibration Parameter Check: If the sampler can display calibration parameters, such as flow rate calibration coefficients, temperature compensation coefficients, etc., check that these parameters are correct. Incorrect calibration parameters may cause the sampler's measurement results to deviate.
